GREESNBORO, N.C. – Three individuals advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective events to highlight the George Mason track & field team's showing at the NCAA East Preliminaries on Thursday, taking place at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
In the women's 400m hurdles, Taylor Wheaton automatically advanced to the quarterfinals with a third-place finish in heat one of the event, crossing the line in 58.70. It was the 16th fastest time overall on the day. Tomorrow's quarterfinals will take place at 7:30 p.m.
Both Cierra McGee and Daianna Barron ran the first round of the women's 400m dash. McGee ran a time of 53.38 and finished fourth in heat six, advancing to Friday's quarterfinals of the event. Barron finished in fifth place in the third heat (54.09) but just missed moving on after posting the 28th fastest time. The quarterfinals will take place tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
Bethany Sachtleben just missed punching her ticket to Eugene in the 10000m, running a PR of 34:22.58 to finish in 15th place. The time is the second-best in school history, besting her previous mark of 34:30.32.
For the men, David Verburg moved on in the 400m, winning heat five and recording the second-fastest time of the day, 45.54. The men's quarterfinals will be run tomorrow at 6:15 p.m.
The Patriots return to action tomorrow starting at 5:00 p.m. with Jasmine Moser in the pole vault and Shavon Briscoe in the 100m hurdles.
