FAIRFAX, Va. - The teams stood tied at halftime, but a strong second half from Delaware sealed an 18-8 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the George Mason lacrosse team Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium. Three Patriots each tallied two goals on the afternoon.
Mason was led offensively by Allie Hilderbrandt, Rachel Obregon and Kirstin Russell with two goals apiece as Samantha Scruggs assisted on the Patriots' last goal of the afternoon. Kate Tangeman and Russell each recorded two caused turnovers as Laura Lesky and Brittany Pastrana each picked up two ground balls. Pastrana and Caroline Brouse split time in cage, combining for 11 saves.
For Delaware, Caitlin McCartney posted four goals followed by Allison Hahn and Chelsea Fay each with three. Bridget Burns rounded out the Blue Hens with multiple goals with two. Hahn finished the game with five assists as Delaware won the edge in shots (35-24), ground balls (14-11) and draw controls (20-8).
The first half was a back-and-forth battle between the conference foes as neither team held more than a two-goal advantage through the first 30 minutes. Delaware's Fay opened the scoring with a tally at the 28:42 mark before Mason took the lead with goals from Hilderbrandt and Russell. The Blue Hens answered with two goals of their own to reclaim the lead, 3-2, with 19:05 to play. But the advantage was short-lived as Lesky and Katie Mascolo put the Patriots back on top, 4-3, with 15:40 on the clock.
Delaware took a 6-4 lead with three unanswered goals thereafter, but Mason closed the half with two goals as the teams stood tied at 6-6 at the break.
The Blue Hens outscored Mason 12-2 in the second half to seal the win. Delaware opened with a 4-0 run before Obregon snapped the streak at 14:27. But eight unanswered from the visiting squad handed Delaware a comfortable 18-7 lead as Obregon completed a Scruggs feed for the final goal with three seconds left.
Mason hits the road for the next three contests traveling first to Drexel for a 7 p.m. matchup on April 12.
