BALTIMORE, Md. – The George Mason softball team (15-36, 3-14) fell to Towson (28-23-1, 10-7) in a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Tiger softball stadium. Towson took the first game by a 2-1 decision and the second by a 7-6 decision.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second in the first game. Bina Abbot, after reaching on a walk, scored off Maureen Hepner's sacrifice fly to right field.
After three scoreless innings from either team, Mason tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Tiffany Webb scored an unearned run off a Brooke Blankenship RBI single. Webb had originally reached on a fielding error.
Towson regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, this time the run came from Delanie Dunham, who had reached on a single. Dunham was able to score after an Abbott single to right field.
The Patriots tried to rally in the top of the seventh with Julia Czarnecki on second, Czarnecki was pinch running for Angele Maioran who reached on a single. Mason would not be able to being Czarnecki around as the Tigers would take the first game by a 2-1 decision.
Blankenship led the Patriots offense with two hits and was 2-for-3 at the plate. Both teams had a total of four hits.
The Tigers took a commanding 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the second game of the afternoon. Yarbrough, who reached on a single, scored the first run for Towson off a Macie McGeehan RBI single. McGeehan and Jillian Donnelly scored the Tiger's next two runs off a Abbott single and a throwing error, respectively.
With Dunham's three run home run to centerfield in the bottom of the second the Tigers extended their lead to 6-0. All three runs in the inning were unearned.
Mason brought the score to 6-1 in the top of the second. Casey Price, who singled in her at bat, scored off a Cori Prince RBI single.
In the top of the fourth, Balk scored a seventh run for the Tigers off a fielding error. Towson now held a 7-1 lead.
The Patriots brought the score to 7-4 scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Lauren McColgan scored the first run of the inning of a failed pick-off attempt. Webb, who reached on a single, scored off a Casey Price fielder's choice. Megan Blank scored the Patriots final run of the inning off Maioran's sacrifice fly to center field.
Mason brought the score to within one in the top of the seventh but it would not be enough to push the Patriots past the Tigers. Webb and McColgan scored off a Blank two RBI double. Webb and McColgan reached on singles.
Mason and Towson will close out this series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Tiger softball complex.
