FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason baseball team will be joining forces with collegiate baseball teams from across the country in the fight against childhood cancer by supporting the Vs. Cancer Foundation with a head-shaving event following its Saturday game against UConn at 2:00 p.m.
Several Mason players will have their heads shaved to get bald in solidarity with kids fighting cancer while also raising money and awareness for an important cause. Fans and supporters of the cause are encouraged to donate through the Vs. Cancer Foundation at vs-cancer.org. To donate directly through Mason baseball, click here.
The Vs. Cancer Foundation is committed to helping children fighting cancer as well as raising funds to continue the necessary research and help create a positive outcome for future cancer patients. Half of all proceeds raised from a Vs. Cancer head-shaving event will go to a local childhood cancer hospital and the remaining monies will fund research at a national level.
According to American Cancer Society's Cancer Facts and Figures 2012, childhood cancer is the number one disease killer of kids and over 175,000 children are diagnosed annually worldwide. Since the 1970s, research breakthroughs have caused five-year cancer survival rates to increase from 50 percent to 80 percent.
