James Madison Completes Sweep Over Softball with 8-0 Decision

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison completed a series swept of the George Mason softball team in Colonial Athletic Association play with an 8-0 win in their final game on Sunday at Veterans Memorial Field in Harrisonburg, Va. With the win the Dukes remain undefeated in conference play while the Patriots fell to 2-10.

James Madison (31-10) struck early in the game, scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the first. Jasmine Butler, after reaching on a fielder's choice, was brought in by a Sarah Mooney single to left center. Jailyn Ford then hit a two-run homer over left field scoring Mooney for a 3-0 lead.

The Dukes extended their lead to seven with four runs in the bottom of the second. In the first at bat of the inning, Haley Johnson hit a home run over the center field wall. Morgan Heath and Hannah Hayes, both reaching on singles, scored off an Erica Field two-run double. Mooney scored the last run of the inning with a home run to left field as JMU took a 7-0 advantage.

The Patriots' (12-30) best scoring opportunity was in the fourth inning. With two outs already on the board, Mason loaded the bases off two hits and one error but was unable to capitalize leaving three runners on base.

Jailyn Ford added the final run for the Dukes in the top of the fifth to end the game. Ford had reached on a double and was brought in by a Caitlin Sandy RBI single.

Ford was 2-for-2 for the Dukes and Heather Kiefer was the winning pitcher allowing only three hits.

Mason returns to action this Wednesday with a doubleheader with UMES at 2:30 p.m. at the George Mason softball complex.
