HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The George Mason lacrosse team dropped an 18-7 decision at Hofstra on Sunday in Colonial Athletic Association play to cap a weekend of league matches. A trio of Patriots each completed a hat trick to lead Mason offensively.
Rachel Obregon, Caitlin Formato and Allie Hilderbrandt each tallied three goals apiece in the contest to lead the Patriots (5-9, 0-5 CAA) offensively, while Mackenzie Jones added a goal. Chloe Chan picked up an assist. Leading Hofstra (8-6, 2-2 CAA) was Becky Conto with four goals, while four additional Pride players finished the game with double-figure goals. Caroline Brouse drew the loss and split time in cage with Brittany Pastrana as the pair combined for 13 saves, while Kelsey Gregerson picked up the win playing 53:30 minutes and making six stops.
Hofstra opened the contest with a 6-0 lead before Formato snapped the run and put Mason on the scoreboard with her 17th tally of the season coming at the 8:07 mark. Following three unanswered Hofstra goals, Jones converted a free position shot at 1:24 for her second goal of the season and a 9-2 score. The Pride scored with five seconds remaining on the clock and carried their momentum into the second half using a 7-0 run that spanned both periods for a 16-2 lead with 15:12 left to play.
Mason then outscored Hofstra 5-2 over the final 12:17 to account for the final 18-7 score. Hilderbrandt jumpstarted the Patriots' offense at 12:17 as Hofstra scored its final two goals of the contest next before Mason closed the game with a 4-0 run highlighted by two goals from Obregon.
Hofstra won the advantage in shots (44-20), ground balls (18-12) and draw controls (17-10). Brouse led Mason with two caused turnovers, while Katie Mascolo picked up three ground balls and won three draw controls.
Mason closes out this three-game road swing on Friday, April 19 at Old Dominion. Opening draw is slated for 7 p.m.
