PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - George Mason stood tied with Drexel at halftime, but the Dragons outscored the Patriots 7-2 in the second half to take away a 10-5 Colonial Athletic Association decision Friday evening.
Mason (5-8, 0-4) saw two goals from Katie Mascolo and Rachel Obregon, while also picking up a tally from Allie Hilderbrandt. The Patriots narrowly lost the edge in shots (24-20), but won the battle in ground balls (14-11) and draw controls (10-7). Caroline Brouse played the full game in cage and recorded eight saves and three ground balls. Hilderbrandt won a team-best six draw controls.
Drexel (10-3, 3-0) was led offensively with hat tricks from Alyse Maiden and Kelli Joran as four additional Dragons posted one goal apiece to keep Drexel undefeated in league play. Teresha Bradley picked up the win in cage playing the full game and recording eight saves.
Drexel opened the scoring with a Joran tally at 25:32, but Mascolo quickly evened the score with her first goal of the evening at 22:45. The Dragons took a 3-1 advantage next, but Mason responded with the final two goals of the half from Obregon and Mascolo as the teams stood in a deadlock at halftime, 3-3.
The second half proved to be the difference as Drexel opened the period with two unanswered before Mason snapped the streak at 17:42. The Dragons, however, responded with a 5-0 run to cushion its lead at 10-4 with just 2:57 left to play. Obregon broke through with 40 seconds left on the clock to account for the final score of 10-5.
Mason returns to the field at Hofstra on Sunday, April 14. Opening draw is slated for 1 p.m.
