FAIRFAX, Va. - The
George Mason softball team went 0-2 in their first day of the Mason Invitational, falling in extra innings to Monmouth in the first game 6-5 before dropping a 10-2 decision to Longwood. The
tournament is being held at the George Mason Softball Complex and will span
over three days.
Extra innings were
needed to decide the first game between the Patriots and Monmouth. Mason got
out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with Julia Czarnecki scoring after
a Brooke Blankenship double. Tiffany Webb scored the second run for Mason.
The Hawks rallied back
in the fourth scoring two runs off a Kayleena Flores triple bringing Vanessa
Cardoza home and scoring herself on the throw. Monmouth then added a run in the
eighth inning to take the lead.
Mason scored two runs in
the eighth inning to force the game into extra innings when Czarnecki scored on a Blankenship single and
Blankenship crossed the plate on a Megan Blank triple to left field.
In the tenth inning,
Monmouth scored two runs to bring the game to 6-4. Tish Derer and Kayla Weiser
scored for the Hawks. Derer scored after a Weiser single and Wiser scored after
a Scherr sacrifice fly. Mason would get an additional run from Lauren McColgan
in the tenth but it wouldn't be enough for the win.
Jordan Barnett was the
winning pitcher for Monmouth and Casey Herring picked up her third loss.
Longwood got off to an
1-0 start in the first inning before adding two more runs in the third from Megan Baltzell and Kori Nishitomi. Longwood
cushioned its lead to 6-0 with two more unanswered runs.
Mason's first run came
in the sixth inning from Casey Price after Harvell grounded out to short stop.
Blank scored the second run for Mason in seventh off a Rodriguez single RBI.
Longwood would add
another three runs before the game ended.
Mason will be back
in action tomorrow when facing Monmouth at 12:15 p.m. and Longwood at 4:30
p.m. for day two of the Mason Invitational.
