Softball Splits in Doubleheader with UNCW

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason softball (8-21, 1-4) team split a doubleheader with Colonial Athletic Association-foe UNCW (11-17, 1-3), picking up their first conference win of the season, Saturday at the George Mason softball complex.  Mason upended UNCW 2-1 in the first game before falling 2-8 in the second.

Extra innings were needed to decide the first game with both teams matching one another both defensively and offensively throughout the first seven innings. A wild pitch in the twelfth inning would be the downfall for the Seahawks allowing Mason clinch the win.

Anna Blessing was strong on the mound for the Patriots allowing only five hits and allowing no hits through the first three innings.

UNCW threatened to score in the fourth inning but Mason was able to escape the inning unharmed. With the bases loaded and no outs, KC Shue flew out to right field to Tiffany Webb who had a tremendous throw into the infield preventing any runners from advancing. In the next at bat, Kristen Jernigan reached on a Fielder's choice and Mason was able to throw out the lead runner at the plate, for the second out of the inning. Rowland was up next for the Seahawks, she hit one straight back at Blessing who threw to first for the third out.

The Seahawks had the first run of the game in the top of the fifth. Olivia Poplin hit a double down the right field line bringing Camry Wagner, who reached on a fielder's choice, home.

UNCW's lead would be short lived as Mason tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning. Price, who singled in the first at bat of the inning, scored for the Patriots off a Julia Czarnecki fielder's choice.

Both teams would go scoreless for the next six innings until the bottom of the twelfth when after a wild pitch Cori Prince was able to score to win the game for the Patriots, 2-1.

In the second game of the day, The Patriots jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning off a Megan Blank RBI single scoring Prince.

UNCW would rally in the top of the second taking a 3-1 lead after Kimmie Stewart, Poplin and Wagner each scored. Stewart was able to score after Poplin singled to right center and both Poplin and Wagner were hit in by McCann who hit a single down the right field line.

The Seahawks cushioned their lead to 5-1 in the third inning off a Stewart RBI double scoring Casey Rowland and Shue.

Mason scored their last run of the game in the third inning. After a throwing error by the Seahawk's third baseman, Tiffany Webb made it all the way around the diamond, bringing the score to 5-2.

McCann added another run in the fourth and Stewart and Wagner added two more runs in the seventh for UNCW for a final score of 8-2.

For the Seahawks, Kimmie Stewart was 4-for-4 at the plate and Casey Rowland from the mound allowed only four hits. Lauren McColgan was 3-for-2 for the Patriots at the plate.

Mason returns to the diamond, to complete this three-game series, tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the George Mason softball complex.
