Balanced Offense Leads Lacrosse Past Liberty, 14-9

No. 19 James Madison Defeats Lacrosse in CAA Opener, 13-7

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason lacrosse team outscored the visiting No. 19 James Madison Dukes in the second half of the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams on Wednesday, but it was not enough to overcome a halftime deficit as the Dukes took the decision 13-7. JMU led at the halftime break 8-1.

Allie Hilderbrandt, Katie Mascolo and Rachel Obregon each tallied two goals apiece for Mason (5-5, 0-1 CAA) while Laura Lesky contributed one goal. Hilderbrandt and Caitlin Formato each posted an assist, while Obregon and Caroline Brouse led Mason with two caused turnovers each. Brouse and Katie Mascolo each scooped up three ground balls, while Chloe Chan won a team-best five draw controls.

For JMU (6-3, 1-0 CAA), Rebecca McLouth and Casey Ancarrow each scored three goals as McLouth also assisted on two goals. The Dukes outshot Mason 27-21 and won the edge in ground balls (18-15) as Mason won the battle in draw controls, 12-10.

JMU quickly put two goals on the scoreboard to take the early lead 2-0 following McLouth and Ancarrow tallies within the first eight minutes. Hilderbrandt cut the score to 2-1 with her 20th goal of the season at 18:56 before the Dukes closed the half with a 6-0 run for an 8-1 halftime advantage.

Mason came out of the break on fire and quickly cut the score to 8-3 with a pair of goals from Obregon with not even six minutes expired on the clock. The Dukes answered back with two goals of their own to extend their lead back to 10-3 at 20:55 as Mason's Hilderbrandt and Mascolo scored unassisted goals to trim the score to 10-5 with 16:21 left to play.

The Dukes answered Mason's short run with three goals for a 13-5 advantage as the Patriots scored the final two goals of the game from Mascolo and Lesky for the final 13-7 decision.

Mason returns to action next Friday, April 5 welcoming Towson to George Mason Stadium for game four of this five-game homestand. Opening draw is slated for 7 p.m.
