FAIRFAX, Va. – Snapping a ten-game losing streak, the George Mason softball team upended UMBC, 5-3, in non-conference action Wednesday. With the win Mason moved to 7-16 overall and UMBC fell to 6-19.
The game was scoreless through the first two innings until Bridget O'Malley put one on the board for the Retrievers off a Kayla Margentino RBI single in the bottom of the third. Taylor Hall and Margentino scored two more runs to give UMBC a 3-0 lead through three innings as Hall scored off a Caitlin Chance RBI and Margentino reached home after Jordan Sganga singled up the middle.
Mason brought the score to within one in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs off three errors. Lauren McColgan scored off a fielder's choice and Megan Blank was able to score off a fielding error by pitcher, Heather Brown, cutting the score to 3-2.
The Patriots defense held UMBC scoreless for the remainder of the game and added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Both runs were scored off a Brooke Blankenship two-run single as Julia Czarnecki and Casey Price rounded the diamond for Mason. Megan O'Connor scored the final run for the Patriots off an error in the sixth inning for a final score of 5-3.
Mason returns to action this weekend when they travel to Atlanta, Ga. for a three-game series against Georgia State to open conference play.
