FAIRFAX, Va. - The
George Mason softball team defeated Cornell, 6-1, and Rutgers, 3-0, Saturday in the second
day of the Patriot Classic Tournament. With the wins the Patriots moved to
5-5 on the season.
Mason led their first game against Cornell 2-1 before having
a four-run inning in the bottom of the fourth.
Brooke Blankenship, Lauren McColgan and Julia Czarnecki each scored for
the Patriots after a Cori Price double. Tori Rodriguez then hit a double to
bring Price home to secure the win for the Patriots.
Cornell's lone run came from Lauren Bucolo in the third
after Christina Villalon hit a single to left field.
Christina Gabriele and Julia Czarnecki led the Patriots with
two hits apiece and the team had a total of eight hits. Gabriele also picked up
the win as pitcher and Meg Parker picked up the loss.
Against Rutgers, Tiffany Webb scored for the Patriots to
give Mason a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. She was able to score after
Megan Blank hit a sacrifice RBI.
Mason's next runs would come in the third after a
Blankenship sacrifice RBI brought Czarnecki home and in the sixth off a Gabriele
single, Blank was able to reach home plate. The Patriots defense would then hold
the Scarlet Knights scoreless for the win.
Stephanie Maher was the winning pitcher allowing only three
hits in seven innings and Alyssa Landrith picked up the loss.
The Patriots return to action tomorrow for an 11:15 a.m. game
with Rutgers and a 3:45 p.m. game with Rider in the final day of the Patriot
Classic.
