FAIRFAX, Va.- Competing in the second day of the Cherry Blossom Classic, the George Mason softball team dropped a pair of games to Ohio State, 5-2, and Pittsburgh, 7-0. The losses moved the Patriots to 6-14 on the season.
Mason opened the day taking on Ohio State as the Buckeyes grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. Leesa Greshan blasted a two-run home run over the centerfield wall to give the Buckeyes the early lead.
Ohio State cushioned its lead in the third scoring three runs on two hits and an error. With the bases loaded, Melaina Saalfeld drove in two runs before Cammi Pranti made it 5-0 with a single to left center.
Mason scored its lone two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Lauren McColgan opened the inning singling to shortstop before Julia Czarnecki reached on a fielder's choice and Tiffany Webb took first on a hit by pitch. A Brooke Blankenship double down the left field line drove both Webb and Czarnecki home, cutting the score to 5-2. Ohio State made a pitching change to work out of the inning and only two hits were allowed the remainder of the game between both teams as the final score stood at 5-2.
Melanie Nichols was the
winning pitcher and Stephanie Maher picked up her fifth loss of the season. Webb finished the game with one run and was 1-for-2 at the plate, while McColgan also went 1-for-2.
In game two of the day for Mason, Pittsburgh scored in four consecutive innings while holding the Patriots scoreless to capture a 7-0 shutout over Mason. After the side was sat down in the first inning, Pittsburgh wasted no time in the second taking the early lead over Mason 2-0. With back-to-back singles from Savannah King and Kaila Balatgek, a Carmelena Moffa double put the Panthers on the board 2-0.
Pittsburgh doubled its lead in the next home half as Holly Stevens picked up two RBIs on a two-run home run to center field, pushing the Panthers in front, 4-0.
The Panthers scored their final two runs in the next two innings using an RBI single from Ashlee Sills in the fourth before Carissa Throckmorton knocked a two-run home run to left field in the fifth for a 7-0 ballgame.
Mason put a runner in scoring position in the sixth inning, but was unable to capitalize as Pittsburgh held on for the shutout, 7-0. Blankenship finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate as Casey Price recorded Mason's only other hit of the afternoon.
Mason returns to action tomorrow for the final day
of the Cherry Blossom Classic facing Canisius at 10:00 a.m.
