FAIRFAX, Va. - The
George Mason softball team went 0-2 in the first day of the Cherry Blossom
Classic. Mason is now 6-13 on the season. Mason fell to Canisius 6-3 and
10-0 to Ohio State.
Against Canisius, Mason took a 1-0 lead in the first inning
after Brooke Blankenship sent one over the fence at right center.
Canisius rallied back in the second with Jen Consaul and
Alexis Roman scoring off a Michelle DelPrince single giving the Griffs a 2-1
lead.
Mason took back the lead with two runs in the third inning.
Lauren McColgan and Julia Czarnecki each scored. McColgan scored off Czarnecki's
single and Czarnecki reached on a Blankenship at bat. The Patriots now led 3-2.
Bethany DeMarco added a run in the fourth inning for the Griffs to tie the
game at 3-3 off a Meghan Cuda single. Canisius added an additional three runs
in the seventh inning for the win. Cuda and Alexis Roman scored off a Valorie
Nappol single. Stephanie Pfenter added the last run off for a Blankenship
error, for a final score of 6-3.
Consaul was the winning pitcher and Casey Herring picked up
her fourth loss of the season.
In the second game, The Buckeyes took a commanding 4-0 lead
in the first inning and never relented for a final score of 10-0 in five innings. Leesa Greshan, Maddy McIntyre and Caitlin Conrad hit home runs
for Ohio State. Camile Prantl led the Buckeyes with three hits.
Olivia O'Reiley was the winning pitcher for the Buckeyes and
Herring picked up the loss.
Mason will be back in action tomorrow for the second day of
the Cherry Blossom when they face Ohio State at 3:30 p.m. and Pitt at 5:15 p.m.
