NEW ORLEANS, La. - After a strong start to the 2013 indoor
track and field season, both the George Mason men's and women's track &
field squads broke into the weekly USTFCCA Regional Rankings, as announced by
the organization on Tuesday.
The women's team jumped seven spots to move into ninth place
in the Southeast Region, and are currently the highest-ranked CAA member in the
standings. Clemson stands atop the region, followed by North Carolina,
Kentucky, South Carolina and Duke in the Top 5.
The men moved up four spots to 14th in the
Southeast Region, the only CAA team to appear in the Top 15. Clemson also tops
the men's rankings, while Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Kentucky and South
Carolina round-out the Top 5.
A complete list of regional rankings is available here.
"With last weekend being the first weekend where we have competed a substantial chunk of our teams, it is nice to be recognized for the efforts," said Head Coach Andrew Gerard. "We had a number of athletes build significantly on their earlier efforts and several others open up their season very solidly, so that is promising. We have a lot more water to go under the bridge for the indoor season however, and our real goals lay outdoors. It is certainly our goal to see our rankings continue to rise as we move through the season and, given the strengths of both our squads, I'm confident that will happen."
This season, the Patriots have several individuals ranked in
the Top 25 nationally, including senior David Verburg in the 500m (46.26, 4th),
senior Cierra McGee in the 400m (53.73, 14th) and junior Mandissa
Marshall (4.00m, 24th) and freshman Jasmine Moser (4.00m, 24th)
in the pole vault. Additionally, the women's 4x400m relay stands 18th
with a time of 3:40.40, while the men's 4x400m relay is 25th (3:11.62).
Both squads have also qualified several individuals for both
the IC4A and ECAC Championships. You can see the complete list of individual
and relay qualifiers here.
The Patriots return to the track this weekend, competing at
the Boston University Valentines' Invitational and the Spire Invitational in
Cleveland.
