FAIRFAX, Va. - Both teams scored four goals in the second
half, but a five goal differential at halftime was enough for Brown to defeat
George Mason lacrosse,15-10, Saturday afternoon in the Patriots' home opener. With the
loss, Mason dipped to 0-2 on the season, while Brown opened its 2013 schedule,
1-0.
Rachel Obregon led Mason with four goals, while Laura Lesky
contributed two goals and a quartet of players each added one goal. Obregon
posted a team-high seven shots as Hilderbrandt recorded five and Lesky took
four in the contest. Both Caitlin Formato and Kate Tangeman recorded a
team-best three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Brittany Pastrana and
Caroline Brouse split time in cage with Pastrana drawing the loss.
For Brown, Abby Bunting scored four goals, while Bre Hudgins
and Janie Gion each added three goals. Hudgins finished the game with six
points on three assists as Grace Healy picked up three ground balls. Kellie
Roddy played the full game in cage and picked up her first win of the season.
Mason opened the scoring with a tally from Lesky at the
28:49 mark before Brown took its first and final lead of the game using a 3-0
run for a 3-1 advantage with 22:11 left in the first. Obregon and Russell cut
the score to a one-goal game sandwiched between a Brown tally, but four unanswered
from the Bears put the visiting squad up 8-3 with just over six minutes
remaining in the first half. Formato converted a free position shot at 4:38 as
Obregon scored Mason's final two goals of the period for an 11-6 Brown
advantage at halftime.
Both teams registered four goals apiece in the second half
as Mason once again opened the scoring as Ashley Wheeler converted a free
position shot at 21:26 for an 11-7 contest. The two squads traded the next four
goals back-and-forth before Mason cut it to 13-10 with Lesky's second goal of
the afternoon at 6:49. Brown capped the game with a 2-0 run for the final 15-10
score.
Brown won the advantage in shots (32-22) and draw controls (19-8), while Mason picked up 13 ground balls to Brown's nine. Pastrana and Brouse combined for eight saves, while Roddy recoded two.
Mason returns to action making the short trip to George
Washington on Wednesday, February 27. Opening draw is slated for 3:30 p.m. in
Washington, D.C.
