Megan Blank went 2-for-3 and drove in a run Sunday afternoon,
but it was not enough as the George Mason softball team dropped its
final game of the Charleston Southern Tournament to UNC Greensboro, 5-4.
With the loss Mason falls to 1-3 on the season, while UNCG mproved to
3-0.
The Spartans took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first
when Tatiana Alcala and Aisha Figueroa both scored unearned on a Eileen Horsmon at bat.
UNC Greensboro's lead would be short-lived, however, as Mason
tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first. After a throwing error
by Dominique Mcdruga,
Julia Czarnecki, who was on second after an illegal
pitch, was able to score the first run for the Patriots. For Mason's
second run,
Angela Maioran hit a single up the middle to bring McColgan
home.
The Patriots took the lead for the first time in the game
in the bottom of the third when a Blank double drove in McColgan for a
3-2 Mason lead.
UNCG retook the lead with a three-run fifth
inning, setting the score at 5-3. Danielle Vega and Figuera scored for
the Spartans to put UNCG in front 4-3. Lindsay Thomas cushioned the
Spartans' lead with a homerun to center field for the 5-3 advantage.
Mason brought the score to within one in the sixth inning after
Brooke Blankenship drove in
Cori Prince on a fly out to center field.
Raeanne Hanks was the winning pitcher for UNCG and Kelly Lupton picked up the save.
Casey Herring drew the loss.
Mason's next game will be Friday at 12:00 p.m. against Winthrop in their first game of the USC Upstate Tournament.
