FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team competed in the Grapple at the Garden for the second consecutive season on Sunday, falling 29-10 to Rutgers and 22-15 to Drexel in dual meets at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y.
Mason wrestled Rutgers in the first dual of the morning. The Scarlet Knights won the first eight individual matches of the dual before Matt Meadows pinned Anthony Messner at the 4:39 mark of the match to record Mason's first points. Jake Kettler followed up the win with a 9-0 major decision victory over Padric Lynch to finalize the 29-10 defeat.
It was another close match between Mason and Drexel after the Dragons narrowly won last season's dual 24-19, once again edging out the Patriots for a 22-15 win. Sophomore Sahid Kargbo recorded the first points for Mason with a 6-3 decision victory along with decision victories for Zach Martinez (7-3) and Ryan Hembury. Kettler picked up his second victory of the afternoon and made the only pin for Mason in the dual 2:01 into his heavyweight match.
The Patriots return to the mat for their first home meet of the season against American on Thursday, December 19 at 7 p.m.
