FAIRFAX, Va. – Senior Fernando Rubio set a new meet record in the men's 400-yard IM in morning preliminary heats then proceeded to break his own record in even finals as the men's and women's swimming & diving teams each continue to lead after day two of the Patriot Invitational on Friday.
Rubio's morning time of 3:54.71 set a new meet record until he surpassed that mark in the finals with a time of 3:54.16 to grab first overall in the event while also outracing the NCAA B-standard time of 3:54.49. William Clendenin finished in second (4:01.13), helping the men's team remain in first place overall with 691 points to UNCW's second place total of 638. After finishing day one in first place for the first time in meet history on Thursday, the women's team also kept their lead with 660.5 points to George Washington University's 530.
Multiple swimmers for the Patriots stayed consistent on the day, winning their evening finals after taking first in the morning heats. Senior Paige Impink did so in two of her events, winning the women's 100-yard butterfly in a time of 55.41 and the women's 100-yard backstroke in a time of 56.73, both faster than her preliminary winning times. She was also a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that finished on top in a time of 1:44.46, joined by Anna Ratana, Shannon Slate and Sydney Fisher.
Freshman Steff Maurer was another woman to finish first in the finals after doing so in preliminaries, improving her 200-yard freestyle time by over one second to win in 1:51.07. Neena Maizels once again placed in diving competition, finishing with 241.65 points for a third place finish in the women's 1-meter dive.
Freshman Jesse Burnley grabbed first in the men's 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:40.22 and the men's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Daniel Camozzo, Burnley, Rubio and Joey Kelly, who finished second in the men's 100-yard butterfly (49.96) completed their relay in a time of 6:46.07.
All teams complete the final events of the Patriot Invitational on Saturday, November 23 starting with preliminary heats at 10 a.m.
