Swimming & Diving Opens Season on Friday

Swimming & Diving Earn 5 First Place Finishes on Saturday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason swimming & diving team grabbed five first place finishes and defeated two of their three opponents on day two of the quad meet with the College of Charleston, Northeastern and Towson on Sunday.

The men's team took the victory over the College of Charleston, outscoring the Cougars 219.5-157.5. Mason's women also defeated the Cougars 249-104, along with Northeastern University by the score of 198-155. Both sides fell to Towson University, the women by the score of 90-263 and the men 167-182. The Patriots led the Tigers 120-117 after the morning session, however Towson was able to make up ground in the afternoon to earn the victory.

Top finishers for Mason in the morning included Joey Kelly with a strong win in the men's 200-yard Freestyle. Kelly finished the event in 1:41.72 with three quarters of open water over the rest of the field.

Senior Daniel Camozzo earned first place in the men's 100 Butterfly, edging out the College of Charleston's Buckley Powell with a time of 50.89 to Powell's 51.23. In the men's 400 IM Mason's William Clendenin was able to maintain the lead throughout the race, finishing first in a time of 4:03.67. Freshman Brandon Nestor was able to grab third in 4:08.79. Also in the morning, Neena Maizels won the women's one-meter dive with 254.48 points. Nick Guttendorf claimed second in the three meter dive with 259.05 points.

The afternoon saw the 400-meter Freestyle relay team of Jesse Burnley, Colin Schwartz, Kelly and Camozzo take first place in a time of 3:06.79. The women's 400 Freestyle relay team placed second, along with Fernando Rubio in the 500-yard Freestyle (4:36.27), Melissa Davis in the women's 200-yard Backstroke (2:03.40) and Caleb Williams in the men's 200-yard Backstroke (1:53.06).

Mason jumps back in the pool on Saturday, November 16 when they host La Salle at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Atlantic 10 competition. Start time is scheduled for noon.
