FAIRFAX, Va. – Fresmen Zepher Begnell and Steff Maurer have each been awarded Atlantic 10 swimming & diving Rookie of the Week honors as announced on Tuesday after their performances in last weekend's dual meet against La Salle.
Begnell swam in four events, winning one individually and two as a member of a relay team. The Warrenton, Va. native won the 50-meter freestyle event in a time of 21.71 and was part of the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams. The medley team of Jesse Burnley, Joel Desatnick, Daniel Camozzo and Begnell won in a time of 1:34.81, while the freestyle team of Begnell, Joey Kelly, Colin Schwartz and Evan Owens took first in a time of 1:26.14.
Maurer captured first place in all three of her events on Saturday. She first won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:54.11 followed by a victory in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the pool in a time of 5:06.26, over six seconds ahead of second place. She anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay team in a time of 1:37.76 with the help of Kelsey Sorensen, Sydney Fisher and Jessica Stiles.
The Patriots get back in the pool with the start of the Patriot Invitational on Thursday, November 21 at 10 a.m. The event continues until Saturday, November 23 with nine teams competing.
