FAIRFAX, Va. – The men's and women's swimming and diving teams each had success on Saturday, as both teams earned team victories over conference opponent La Salle in Mason's second dual meet of the season.
The men's squad earned their fourth victory of the season with a 188-111 victory and freshmen Steff Mauerer and Sydney Fisher helped guide the women's team to its second victory of the season, earning 181 points to La Salle's 118. The two teams combined for 20 first place event finishes, individually and in relays.
Maurer earned her first victory of the afternoon in the women's 200-yard freestyle with a 1:54.11 finishing time over second place Jessica Stiles (1:57.73). The freshman then finished first in the women's 500-yard freestyle (5:06.26) and anchored the women's 200-yard freestyle relay in which she was joined by Kelsey Sorensen, Fisher and Stiles (1:37.76). Sophomore Melissa Davis won the women's 400-yard freestyle by over six seconds in a time of 2:02.4 and also the 400-yard IM in 4:35.11, both over a second place Kara Tansill.
Fisher picked up additional victories in the women's 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.28 and in the women's 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:47.50 with the team of Paige Impink, Shannon Slate and Anna Ratana.
Freshman Zepher Begnell was a three-time winner on the day for the men, individually winning the men's 50-yard freestyle in a time of 21.71, anchoring the men's 200-yard medley relay team of Jesse Burnley, Joel Desatnick and Danny Camozzo (1:34.81), and leading off the winning men's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Joey Kelly, Colin Schwartz and Evan Owens. Camozzo also won the men's 100 butterfly (51.06) and the men's 200-yard butterfly (1:57.22).
The Patriots return to the pool when they host the annual Patriot Invitational at the Aquatic and Fitness Center from Thursday, November 21 to Saturday, November 23. Nine teams will be competing at this year's Invitational with event starting daily at 10 a.m.
