FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team had 10 team members take part in two tournaments as they began competition this season. Three wrestlers traveled to the Pembroke Classic in Pembroke, NC on Saturday while seven men traveled to Binghamton, N.Y. to compete in the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open on Sunday. All wrestlers competed unattached.
At the Pembroke Classic hosted by UNC Pembroke, Luke Ludke, Seth Robertson and transfer Blake Roulo each advanced to at least the championship quarterfinals after winning their opening matches in the first three rounds. Ludke, wrestling at 149 pounds, fell in the quarterfinals with a 4-3 decision as well aS Robertson at 174lbs. in a 7-3 decision that favored UNC Pembroke's Robert Shade.
Roulo was able to wrestle his way to the championship match at 157lbs. after a 3-2 decision victory in the semi-finals. The junior was defeated by Limestone's Devon Jackson in an 11-3 decision in the championship bout for a second place finish at the Classic.
Ibrahim Bunduka, Bill Prochniewski, Shohei Takagi, Ryan Hunsberger, Ryan Hembury, Derek Dwyer and Jake Kettler each competed in the Bearcat Open, a meet that brought over 400 wrestlers from 30 teams across the nation. Takagi advanced the farthest of the seven, making it to the third round before falling to NWCA All-Star Classic competitor Nahshon Garrett of Cornell after a fall at 3:06. No team points were recorded
