George Mason Athletics Men's Cross Country 9/6/2012 2:00:00 PM

FAIRFAX, Va. - Recently, Heather Selheimer of the George Mason cross country team took some time to answer some questions about herself for GoMason.com. Currently a sophomore, Selheimer had her best finish last year at the Mount St. Mary's relays, finishing 5th overall and 2nd for Mason. See what she had to say below...

GoMason.com: Why did you choose George Mason University?

Selheimer: I chose Mason because of the atmosphere, coaches, people on campus, and academics; they all clicked for me. After my first visit, I fell in love with the school and after talking to the coaches and doing some research, it was the perfect fit where I could excel both academically and athletically. Being really close to DC didn't hurt either!

GoMason.com: What are your goals for this season?

Selheimer: Last year, I didn't do great at the conference meet, so I really want to make all-conference this year and place high at the NCAA Regional meet.

GoMason.com: Who would you say you look up to the most?

Selheimer: My teammate Monique McKenzie. She really took me under her wing last year when I was a freshman. I could always count on her to push me to do my best in workouts, to make me smile during a hard workout or a tough race, or just to be there for me to talk to. She has also taught me that when you have the confidence and believe you can do something, anything is possible. Even though she graduates this winter and I won't have the track season to train with her, I know that she will continue to share in my success on and off the track.

GoMason.com: What does your typical off-season training consist of?

Selheimer: My off-season training is primarily focused on getting good training runs in and increasing my mileage with a few fartlek workouts or tempo runs. One of my favorite workouts is repeat 400's at a relaxed pace.

GoMason.com: What would you like to do after college?

Selheimer: I would really like to do something in the medical field. Currently, I am interested in being an orthopedic surgeon or sports medicine doctor, but there's a high chance that I may change my mind in the future.

GoMason.com: If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go?

Selheimer: I think it would be really cool to do a tour in Alaska. Even though I hate the cold, I've heard that it is absolutely gorgeous there. I would also like to backpack or travel through Europe.

Heather Selheimer's Favorite's:

Color - Any neon color! I like really bright colors that stand out, my dorm room currently is neon pink and orange themed.

Ice-cream flavor - Ben and Jerry's Milk & Cookies, it's the best snack for watching TV on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Quote - "It's impossible said pride. It's risky said experience. It's pointless says reason. Give it a try whispered the heart."
