Fairfax, Va - The George Mason men's golf team is set to host the CHAMP/Patriot
Intercollegiate this weekend at Laurel Hills Golf Course in Lorton, Va. The
7,010-yard, par 71 course will be a challenge to the 11 other visiting teams
coming to play this weekend. The tournament is a 54-hole event, with two rounds
on Saturday and the final round on Sunday, Sept. 30.
The last time the Patriots hosted a golf tournament, the Patriot Intercollegiate
and Patriot Shootout, each one-day tournaments was on March 30-31, 2009. Mason
finished in third place at the 36-hole Patriot Intercollegiate and earned
medalist honors at the 18-hole Patriot Shootout.
The Patriots will field two teams for the tournament, a Green and Gold team,
along with 11 other programs. The field includes IUPUI, Lafayette, Longwood,
Missouri, Penn, Villanova and five fellow CAA schools, Delaware, Drexel,
Hofstra, James Madison and Towson.
Mason has played in two tournaments this fall, the Towson STX Match Play
Tournament, losing to Towson in the championship, and finishing ninth at the
VCU Shootout last weekend. The team is led by Kevin Yerks, who earned CAA
Player of the Week honors after a fourth place finish at the VCU Shootout. The
junior shot 70-72-74—216 (E) to lead the Patriots. Senior Bryan Giles finished
33rd at VCU Shootout and won all three matches at the Towson STX
Match Play Tournament.
Each team will have five players with the lowest four scores counting towards
the team score. The opening two rounds will begin Saturday, Sept. 29 with a 8:30
a.m. shotgun start. The final round will occur on Sunday, Sept. 30, with the
first tee time scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
The scores and stats will be posted on GoMason.com each day after competition
has been completed.
