Leading up to the 2013 Mason track & field
season, we will be giving fans an opportunity to get to know a student-athlete on
the team.
This week we talked with junior thrower Jason
Wellington. Last season Jason recorded personal bests in the javelin and hammer
throw, finishing second at the CAA Championships in the javelin with a distance
of 58.26m and sixth in the hammer throw, going 44.91m.
Be sure to check back next week as we meet another
Mason T&F athlete.
Name: Jason Wellington
Year in School:
Senior
Events:
Javelin and Hammer
Nicknames: Grandpa
-What
attracted you to Mason?
I had
two brothers go to Mason so I knew a little about Mason. Also, I wanted to
continue to do track and thought I would be able to do that.
-When did you start participating in track and field?
I
started throwing shot put and discus in high school and then switched to
javelin and hammer in college.
-What is your favorite thing about T&F?
I like
that T&F is a team sport but my events are on me. If I don't perform it's
all on me and no one else.
-What track memory stands out the most for you? Winning
second place at CAA Championship last season in the javelin but then missing
IC4As by three inches.
-What is your major, and what are your plans for after your graduate?
I am a
photography and art education major. After I graduate I am planning on to get
my masters in Art Education from Mason and then go on to teaching high school
photography.
On the Track:
-What
are your goals for the upcoming season?
My
goals for this season are to improve on last year and make it to IC4A
Championship and hopefully Regional Championship.
-What does your typical off-season training consist of?
My off-season
training consist of running, yoga, and body weight exercises.
-What is your favorite event to compete in and why?
Javelin
because there are always new challenges to overcome every time I throw.
-What was your biggest accomplishment last season?
Getting
new personal bests in almost every meet last season in either one or both of my
events.
-You
recorded personal-bests in the javelin and hammer throw last season and
finished second in the javelin at conference championships but missed
qualifying for the IC4A Championships...how do you build on that success going
into the 2013 season?
By
working harder in the weight room and at each practice to fix areas that need
to be improved. I am also starting to use a new technique in the hammer throw
that will help me move through the circle faster. For javelin, I am working on
my core strength and refining my technique.
