GUANAJUATO, Mexico - George Mason rising senior David Verburg capped off a superlative season this weekend, traveling to Mexico where he finished first in the 400-meter dash at the 2012 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships. He also ran the final leg of the gold medal-winning 4x400-meter relay.

Representing the United States, Verburg crossed the line in 45.95 during the preliminary round, the fastest time in the field, and shaved more than eight-tenths off as he took home first place in the 400-meter finals in a time of 45.14. His nearest competitor, Philip Osei of Canada, trailed by 0.37 seconds finishing with a time of 45.51.

Verburg also took part in the men's 4x400-meter relay where he led the USA to another gold medal, anchoring the squad which finished first with a time of 3:03.81. Verburg ran the final leg of the race, in which he crossed the line just over half a second ahead of second-place Alonzo Russell and the Bahamas team.

"David's performance is a tremendous accomplishment for him and a great wrap up for his individual season," said Mason director of track & field Andrew Gerard. "David has excelled at the conference, national and now international levels and his performance this weekend further validates his success and hard work."

The 2012 CAA Male Athlete of the Year, Verburg earned first-team All-America honors this season after placing fourth in the 400 meters at the NCAA Championship with a time of 45.22. He also earned All-America honors as a member of Mason's 4X400 relay team that finished seventh at the NCAA Championship with a time of 3:09.93.

He continued to impress on the national stage by reaching the finals of the 400 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June and placing seventh in a time of 45.36. He received Most Outstanding Performer in track events at the CAA Championship after winning the 400 meters with a meet-record time of 45.06. Verburg was also a member of the Patriots' 4X400 relay team that won a CAA title and he finished second in the 200 meters (21.16). Verburg was the IC4A champion in the 400 meters as well and had the fastest time in the 400m at the NCAA East Regional Qualifying meet.
