KINGSTON, Jamaica - Richard Phillips, a Jamaica native who is one of the top
hurdlers in George Mason track and field history, booked his third trip to the
Summer Olympics over the weekend as he finished third in the110-meter hurdles at
the JAAA/Supreme Venture National Senior Championships. Phillips, who
represented Jamaica in both the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, crossed the line in
13.43 seconds, good for the third and final spot to represent his country in
London.
Four years ago in Beijing, Phillips advanced to the finals
of the 110-meter hurdles, finishing seventh behind fellow Patriot Maurice
Wignall ('00). His time of 13.60 in 2008 was 0.42 seconds off the bronze-medal
time.
He was a 2004 Olympian in Athens, advancing to the
semi-finals of the 110-meter hurdles, missing the finals by 15 hundredths of a
second as he recorded a time of 13.39.
Phillips holds the school record in the indoor 60-meter
hurdles (7.68, 2005) and the outdoor 110-meter hurdles of 13.48, set in 2004.
He is a four-time all-American in the 60-meter hurdles as well as the 110-meter
hurdles and as part of Mason's 4x100-meter relay in 2003.
The men's 110-meter hurdles will be contested beginning
Tuesday, August 7 at 10:10 a.m. London time at the Olympic Stadium.
