Drake University once again serves as host for the 2012 NCAA Outdoor
Track and Field Championships on June 6-9. NCAA.com and
ESPN3.com will carry live coverage starting Wednesday. ESPNU will air live
coverage on Saturday, June 9, starting at noon.
Three individuals and two relays from Mason will vie for a national
title, including junior sprinter David Verburg in the 400m dash, senior Lavell
Handy in the long jump, junior pole vaulter Mandissa Marshall and both the men's
and women's 4x400m relays.
Verburg captured 400m titles at the CAA, IC4A and NCAA East Regional
Championships this season. He ran a season-best time of 45.06 at the CAA
Outdoor Championships and also scored in the 200m and 4x400m relay en route to
collecting CAA Male Track Performer of the Meet honors. The time is currently
the second-best mark in the NCAA and sixth in the nation.
Handy captured his second-consecutive CAA long jump title and
also won the triple jump to earn CAA Male Field Performer of the Meet
accolades. He followed that performance with an IC4A title and a fifth-place
finish at the NCAA East Regionals. His distance of 7.85m at the CAA
Championships currently stands as the 11th-best mark in the NCAA.
After setting a school record in the pole vault at the
beginning of the outdoor season, Marshall continued her strong junior campaign
by capturing CAA and ECAC titles in the event, while finishing in a tie for
first place at the East Regional Finals. Her record-setting vault of 4.30m
earlier this season at the W&L/VMI Track Carnival is good for ninth place
among NCAA competitors.
The men's 4x400m relay won a CAA title and finished second
at IC4A and fourth at the East Regionals, while the women also claimed a
conference title, placed second at the ECAC Championships and grabbed the final
qualifying spot to advance them for a chance at a national title during the
East Regionals Championship.
