NEW ORLEANS, La. - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross
Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Monday the association's
Region Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor
Track & Field season, and George Mason junior sprinter David Verburg and
Assistant Coach Abigi Id-Deen were among the honorees.
Voted on by the nation's coaches, Verburg was tabbed as the
Southeast Region Male Athlete of the Year, while Id-Deen took home Southeast
Region Assistant Coach of the Year accolades. You can view all of the award winners from across the nation here.
"We're thrilled to have both Coach Id-Deen and David honored,"
remarked Head Coach Andrew Gerard. "Both have done a tremendous job not only
this year but through their years at George Mason. This honor is well deserved
and a credit to the long hours and work they've both put in."
Verburg captured 400m titles at the CAA, IC4A and NCAA East
Regional Championships this season. He ran a season-best time of 45.06 at the CAA Outdoor Championships and also scored in the 200m and 4x400m relay en
route to collecting CAA Male Track Performer of the Meet honors. The time is currently the second-best mark in the NCAA and sixth in the nation
entering the NCAA Outdoor Championships this week on the campus of Drake
University.
"Being named Southeast
Region Male Athlete of the Year is one of the greatest honors I have
ever received," said Verburg. "The East has world class athletes and
incredible competition, so to win this award is a tremendous
achievement.
"This has been a great
season so far and to say the least, I have been blessed. I couldn't of
achieved this without the support of my Dad and my older brother, also a
special thanks to my teammates who pushed me at practice to make it
this far. Of course having the Assistant Coach of the Year training me
is always a big plus."
Id-Deen, who is responsible for George Mason's sprinters, jumpers,
and hurdles, helped guide the Patriots to their third-consecutive men's track
title as his crew scored 164 of 267 of the team's points. Eleven of his
athletes qualified for the NCAA East Region Championships, with two individuals advancing
to compete for a national title.
"It is always a great honor
to be recognized by your peers," said Id-Deen. "I would like to thank Coach Gerard for
giving me a great opportunity to be a part of his program, and I would also
like to give a special thanks to all the athletes I have coached past
and present who have dealt with me and my madness."
The NCAA Outdoor Championships kick off on June 6 in Des Moines,
Iowa, where Verburg will be joined by senior long jumper Lavell Handy, junior
pole vaulter Mandissa Marshall and both the men's and women's 4x400m relays. NCAA.com and ESPN3.com
will carry live coverage starting Wednesday. ESPNU will air live coverage on
Saturday, June 9, starting at noon.
