EUGENE, Ore. - George Mason track and field athletes David
Verburg and LaVell Handy will travel to TrackTown USA in Eugene, Oregon to
compete at the US Track and Field Trials over the next two weeks. The event to
determine the 2012 US Olympic Team begins on June 21 and runs through July 1.
Information about the meet is available at http://tracktown12.gotracktownusa.com/.
Additionally, NBC and the NBCSports networks will televise select portions of the
meet. You can view the television schedule here.
Verburg will compete in the 400m, while Handy will
participate in both the long and triple jumps.
In a season that saw him earn First Team USTFCCCA First Team All-America,
USTFCCCA Southeast Region Male Track Athlete of the Year and CAA Male Track
Athlete of the Meet honors, Verburg will look to continue his impressive
showing in the 400m. He finished fourth in the event at the NCAA Outdoor
Championships earlier this month, advancing to the national championships after
winning the NCAA East Region Championships. Earlier in the season, he finished
the 400m in a time of 45.06 at the CAA Championship Meet, a personal-best, the
second-fastest time in school history and an Olympic Trials 'A' qualifying
time. He also took home the event title at the IC4A Outdoor Championships.
"Competing
at the Olympic Trials has always been a dream for me," said Verburg. "It's
amazing to see my dream turn into a reality. I have a lot of support from my
family and friends and great coaches that have helped me get this far. I have
been blessed so now I have to just compete and represent Mason to the best of
my ability, and if it all goes well represent my country at the Olympic
games."
The qualifying round of the 400m will take place at 6:10 pm on Friday, July
22, with the semifinals slated for 8:00 pm on Saturday and the finals at 7:20
pm on Sunday.
Additionally, Verburg has been selected to compete at the North
American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) U-23 Championships, held July
6-8 in Guanajuato, Mexico.
Handy captured his second-consecutive CAA long jump title
and also won the triple jump to earn CAA Male Field Performer of the Meet
accolades earlier this season. He jumped a personal-best 7.85m at the conference meet, qualifying him for the Olympic Trials. He followed that performance with an IC4A title
and a fifth-place finish at the NCAA East Regionals in the long jump, advancing
to the NCAA Outdoor Championships where he placed ninth with a jump of 7.65m en
route to collecting Second Team USTFCCCA All-America accolades.
Handy also claimed his second-consecutive triple jump title
at IC4A's, and fell just short of advancing to the national championships after
finishing 14th at the East Regionals.
"For me to be competing at the trials means a lot to me after my years at Mason," said Handy. "I am blessed for the opportunity to take a shot at the next
level in track and field. I think competing here gives me the chance to
display all the long hours and hard work I have dedicated to my events.
After a season full of highs and lows it is an honor to be selected to
compete in the long and triple jump."
The long jump qualifying round will take place at 7:30 pm on
June 22, with the finals on June 24 at 7:40 pm. Triple jump will take place one
week later, with the qualifying round on June 28 at 7:30 pm and the
finals on June 30 at 7:40 pm.
