FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason men's track and field team
collected its third consecutive Colonial Athletic Association championship, and
the Patriots collected 11 individual titles as they wrapped up competition at
the CAA Championships on Saturday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
The men ran away with its third title in as many years and seventh in program history, finishing
the meet with 267 points. Its nearest competitor was UNCW, who tallied 166
points on the day and was followed by William and Mary (122), Northeastern
(117), VCU (102) and Georgia State (13). The Mason women finished fourth in the
team competition.
In addition to the men's team title, Lavell Handy was named
the Men's Field Athlete of the Meet for the second straight season, David
Verburg was tabbed the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet and Mandissa Marshall
was recognized as the Women's Co-Field Athlete of the Meet.
Verburg claimed his third-consecutive 400m title, topping
the competition in a time of 45.06, while Marshall won her second women's pole
vault title with a height of 4.15m. Verburg's time in the event is the second-best in program history, an Olympic 'A' Standard time, and is currently the fastest time in the
country.
Handy defended his titles in the long and triple jumps,
winning the long jump Friday with a distance of 7.85m before taking the top
spot in the triple jump Saturday, leaping 15.56m. He also competed in the 110m
hurdles but fell just short of defending his title as he placed second in a season-best
time of 14.20.
Another highlight on the men's side was an outstanding
performance by Rachaunn Ruffin, who became the first-ever four-time 100m men's champion
after running a time of 10.60.
Other event winners for the men included George Empty in the
400m hurdles (52.23), Adrian Vaughn in the 200m (21.15), Daniel Callan in the
3000m steeplechase (9:24.06) and Gustavo Osorio in the decathlon (6428 pts.).
The two relays on the day were also champions, as the 4x100 squad of Handy,
Adrian Vaughn, Travaughn Baker-Johnson and Nick Vaughn crossed the finish line
in 40.82 while the 4x400 team of Nick Vaughn, George Empty, Ja-Vell Bullard and
David Verburg posted an event-best time of 3:12.01.
Mason cleaned up in the 400m, sweeping the top five spots. Paced
by Verburg, Nick Vaughn (46.28), Ja-Vell Bullard (46.81), Adrian Vaughn (46.89)
and Empty (47.93) all followed in order. The Patriots also claimed four of the
top five spots in the 200m as Adrian Vaughn won the events and was followed by
Verburg in second (21.16), Baker-Johnson in fourth (22.11) and Bullard in fifth
(22.12).
On the women's side, Amanda Denger successfully defended her
title in the heptathlon, racking up 4697 pts, while the 4x400 relay squad of
Cierra McGee, Daianna Barron, Kristin Bethel and Dominique Graham took home a CAA
title in a time of 3:39.55.
Also scoring for Mason on the day were Webley (10.91, 5th)
and Baker-Johnson (10.94, 6th) in the 100m, Webley (15.24m, 2nd)
and Michael Lawton (14.36m, 6th) in the triple jump, Anthony
Williams in the 110m hurdles (14.33, 3rd), Alex Levine (3:53.83, 3rd,
season-best) and Robert Reynolds (4:00.60, 7th) in the 1500m,
Williams in the 400m hurdles (54.18, 4th), Kenzell Crawford in the
decathlon (5675 pts, 4th), Cody Raphael (1:52.56, 4th)
and David Rushing (1:52.89, 5th) in the 800m, Jason Hartman in the
3000m steeplechase (9:50.61, 5th), Webley (10.91, 5th)
and Baker-Johnson (10.94, 6th) in the 100m, and Kirk Nguyen (44.08m,
6th) in the discus.
Mason fell just short of capturing conference titles in
several events, as Dominique Graham finished second in the high jump (1.65m),
Cierra McGee was second in both the 400m (53.32) and 200m (24.02), and the
4x100 relay of Crystalyne Clark, McGee, Katea Jemmott and Aneesha Scott placed
second after crossing the finish line in a time of 45.44.
Also scoring for the women was Grace Mavugara in the triple
jump (12.34m, 3rd), Kristin Bethel in the 400m hurdles (1:02.52, personal best),
Daianna Barron in the 400m (55.53, 6th), Heather
Selheimer (2:14.45, 6th) and Monique McKenzie (2:15.18) in the 800m,
Nao Ma in the 1500m (4:38.96, 7th), and Scott (12.05, 7th)
and Clark (12.14, 8th) in the 100m.
James Madison took home the women's title in a close battle
with VCU and Georgia State. JMU finished the meet with 132 points, while VCU
placed second with 126.5 points and Georgia State recorded 122 points. George
Mason finished in fourth in 98.5 points, followed by Delaware (96), UNCW (68),
Towson (60.5), William and Mary (57.5) and Northeastern (57).
Next up for George Mason is the IC4A/ECAC Championships,
taking place in two weeks at Princeton University.
