JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Action concluded at the 2012 NCAA Track
& Field East Regionals on Saturday evening at Hodges Stadium, and with it, the
George Mason Patriots added two more national championship qualifiers.
The men's 4x400-meter relay squad consisting of Nick
Vaughn, George Empty, Ja-Vell Bullard and David Verburg crossed the line in
3:03.82, second in the first of three heats and a time good for fourth overall.
Mason was just 0.18 seconds behind heat winner Florida and 0.62 seconds off of
the top time set by LSU (3:03.20). The time set by the relay squad also ranks
as a season-best and the fifth-fastest time in the 4x400 in program history.
In the final event of the three-day competition, the women's
4x400-meter relay, Mason locked up the final qualifying spot. The quartet of
Daianna Barron, Cierra McGee, Jasmine Robinson, and Dominique Graham finished fourth
in heat three with a time of 3:36.84, but was more than a half-second faster
than their next competitor to take the last of the three open spots in the
national championship field available from the region. It was also a season-best time for the
Patriots in the event.
Vaughn also competed in the 200-meter dash, where he
finished seventh in heat two and 19th overall with a time of 20.92
seconds, a new season best. Rounding out the competition for the Patriots on
the final day was Everett Hackett as he finished the 5,000-meter run in 43rd
place with a time of 14:52.71.
Mason will be represented with five entries in the national
championship field, as along with the 4x400 relays, Verburg will compete for
the 400-meter title while Lavell Handy and Mandissa Marshall will compete in
the men's long jump and women's pole vault events, respectively. The 2012 NCAA
Track & Field Championships will take place from June 6-9 in Des Moines,
Iowa at Drake Stadium.
