FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason lacrosse team dropped a 16-7
decision to Colonial Athletic Association foe Drexel Friday night at George Mason
Stadium. With two draw controls on the evening, Emily Ellisen became the program's
all-time leader in career draw controls having recorded 102 in four seasons.
Ellisen and Rachel Obregon led Mason (2-9, 0-2 CAA)
offensively each scoring two goals, while Kaylee Mikolon, Mackenzie Jones and
Caitlin Formato each added a goal. Kara Bowman paced the Patriots with four
ground balls as Ellisen and Kiersten Jauschnegg recorded two caused turnovers
apiece. Earning her second start of the season, goalkeeper Katie Teague drew
the loss playing the full game in cage, recording nine saves.
For Drexel (8-3, 1-1 CAA), Alyse Maiden, Kelli Joran and
Alissa Watts each scored three times, while three additional Dragons record two
goals apiece. Kristin Kopenhaver capped the scoring with a goal. Jaclyn Klunder
led with three assists and finished the game with two goals, two ground balls
and one caused turnover. Amanda Santandrea picked up the win in cage, recording
two saves.
The Patriots gave the Dragons a scare late in the second
half using a 4-0 run, but it was not enough to overcome a 9-3 halftime deficit.
Drexel opened the scoring on an unassisted shot from Watts before Obregon
scored her 14th goal of the season and first of the game at 24:26 to
even the score at 1-all. The Dragons then scored four unanswered to open a 5-1
lead with 18:05 to play before Ellisen and Mikolon combined to cut the score to
5-3 with 10:17 on the clock.
The visiting squad then opened a 9-0 run spanning both
periods for a 14-3 margin before Mason's 4-0 spurt fueled by unassisted goals
from Jones, Ellisen, Formato and Obregon sliced the score to 14-7 with 13:19 to
play. Watts snapped the run on a free position shot as Charlotte Wood closed
the game finishing a Watts feed for the final score.
Drexel won the edge in shots (27-10), ground balls (17-12),
draw controls (16-9) and free position shots (4-1).
Ellisen's two draw controls pushed the senior past the
previous all-time record of 101 set by Jill Toomey from 2000-03.
Mason returns to action on Sunday, April 8 welcoming Hofstra
at noon on Senior Day.
