COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The
Patriots fell twice in a midweek doubleheader to University of Maryland on
Wednesday evening, losing the first game 3-1 and the second game 6-3.
In the first game, Mason and Maryland played a scoreless
ball game until each team scored one run in the third inning. As the away team, the Patriots struck first
when senior left fielder Alyssa See and scored when the next batter, freshman
Brooke Blankenship, hit a double to left field.
Despite back to back hits to start the inning, Mason was unable to score
any more in the inning and the Terrapins tied the game with a run of their own
in the bottom half of the third inning.
After two more scoreless innings for both teams, Maryland was able to
put two runs on the board in the bottom half of the sixth inning when pinch
hitter Kelly Trimble hit a two run homer.
The Patriots were unable to strike back in the top of the seventh and
Trimble's hit turned out to be the game winner.
In the second game, Maryland took the momentum of their game
winning hit from the last game and came out with a first inning run in game
2. The next scoring came from Mason in
the top half of the 4th when the Patriots were able to put three
runs on the board. The inning began when
Blankenship, the second baseman in game two, hit a double to centerfield. The next batter was catcher Emily Lafferty
who was able to draw a walk. After the
next two batters were retired, freshman third baseman Tori Rodriguez hit a
clutch single to drive in Blankenship.
The next batter was junior right fielder who Megan Blank hit a two RBI
single, driving in Lafferty and Rodriguez.
However, once again the Terrapins were able to respond in the bottom
half of the inning by putting up five runs off four hits, a walk and a hit by
pitch, to retake the lead 6-3. Neither
team scored again in the game, and the Terps snuck away with a doubleheader
sweep.
