Each day this week leading up to Senior Day on April 8 at 12 p.m., GoMason.com will highlight a senior lacrosse player "Off the Field." In the first installment, Joy Oberlin shares some of her fondest memories and what she will miss most. Oberlin, a native of Phoenix, Md., has appeared in 34 games as a four-year member of the lacrosse team.
What is your funniest memory with the team you can share?
It is extremely hard to pinpoint just one funny memory with
this hysterical group of girls, but this one is up there on my list. On our
spring break away trip this year, some of the girls decided to do karaoke on
the long bus ride, which was entertaining enough. But when all three coaches
took the aisle for their solo, we could not believe our eyes (and ears). From
rapping Nicki Minaj to singing old boy band hits, we couldn't stop laughing and
taking pictures so we would never forget!
What
will you miss most about Mason Lacrosse?
I will most definitely miss seeing my teammates each and
every day. We have been through an unbelievable amount together and these girls
have become my family away from home. I think it's rare to come across a group
of girls that spend so much time together, both on and off the field, and I
will definitely cherish all of the relationships we have formed over the years.
Do you
hope to participate in the lacrosse world in some capacity after
graduation (coaching, playing, etc.)?
As a teacher, I definitely want to coach a local team in the
evenings after teaching during the day. As for playing, I am definitely going
to have to join an adult league of some sort to fill the huge void!
What
will you miss about being a student-athlete in general?
I will miss the feeling of pride - pride in my school, in my
team, and in myself for never giving up and accomplishing my dream of being a
four-year D1 student-athlete.
What
will you miss the most about Mason itself?
I will miss the beautiful campus and my amazing friends. I
really took it for granted how often you get to see your friends when you're in
college and thinking about working full-time in different states is really
starting to hit me.
What
is your major and what are your plans after graduation?
I am majoring in Integrative Studies with a Concentration in
Elementary Education and a minor in Childhood Studies. My plans after
graduation are to work in a local preschool for the summer and find a more permanent
position for the fall. I am keeping all of my options open, as I would love to
travel to Europe in the near future as well.
