TOWSON, Md. - The George Mason lacrosse team stood tied at
intermission with Towson, but the Tigers used a strong second half to defeat
the visiting Patriots 15-9 Friday evening in Colonial Athletic Association
play. Emily Ellisen led Mason with three goals on the evening, while Allie
Hilderbrandt added a pair.
Six different Patriots scored for the visiting team led by
Ellisen and Hilderbrandt. Rachel Obregon, Katie Mascolo, Mary Schwartz and Anna
Kopecka all added a goal individually for Mason (3-12, 1-5 CAA). Schwartz
completed the game with three assists as Ellisen capped the contest with three
draw controls, one assist and one caused turnover. Brittany Pastrana played the
full game in cage, collecting 10 saves including seven in the first half.
Towson remained undefeated in conference play using three
different Tigers' hat tricks to lead the offense. Ashleigh Rohrback posted
three goals and five assists to finish with a team-high eight points for Towson
(12-3, 6-0 CAA). Katie Leech collected three caused turnovers as Kelly Murkey
led with three ground balls.
Towson opened the contest scoring the first three goals to
take a 3-0 lead with just under four minutes expired on the game clock. Mason
countered the run scoring the next three goals from Obregon and a pair from
Ellisen to knot the score at 3-3 with 18:28 to play in the first half. The
Tigers bookended goals from Hilderbrandt and Mascolo with a pair of goals to
close the period deadlocked at 5-5.
The Tigers opened the final period mirroring the first half,
scoring the first three goals for an 8-5 lead at 18:31. Kopecka snapped the
run, but Towson answered with the next seven goals to jump out with a 15-6
margin with 5:17 remaining. Ellisen, Schwartz and Hilderbrandt closed the game
with the final three goals for the 15-9 final score.
Towson won the edge in shots (31-23), ground balls (11-4)
and draw controls (14-12).
Mason closes out regular season play traveling
to Delaware for a 1 p.m. matinee on Sunday, April 22.
