The George Mason track & field team will compete at four
separate meets over the weekend, including the Princeton/Larry Ellis
Invitational, JMU Invitational, Baylor/Michael Johnson Invitational and the Mt.
SAC Relays.
The men's team continues to build on its
strong outdoor season, continuing to rank second in the Southeast Region in the
latest USTFCCA poll released this week.
Helping the push to the top of the regional
rankings are several athletes who rank at the top of the CAA in their
respective events, including Rachaunn Ruffin in the 100m dash (10.36, 31st
nationally), David Verburg in both the 200m dash (20.91, 44th
nationally) and 400m dash (46.24, 14th nationally), Everett Hackett
in the 5000m run (14:03.16), Anthony Williams in the 110m hurdles (14.24),
George Empty in the 400m hurdles (52.98), the men's 4x100m and 4x400m relays
and Lavell Handy in the long jump (7.64m, 15th nationally).
The women's team also leads the conference in
several events, including the 4x400m relay, Mandissa Marshall in the pole vault
(4.30m, 6th nationally) and Kelsey Reese in the javelin (47.02m, 32nd
nationally).
Leading up to the CAA Track & Field Championships on the campus of George Mason in early May, GoMason.com is featuring a different track athlete/coach each week in its blog. Be sure to read this week's edition about Head Coach Andrew Gerard here.
