The pairings are set for the
Virginia 529 CAA Men's and Women's Tennis Championships, which will be held
April 19-22 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion
University in Norfolk, Va. The Patriots are seeded #7 and will be in action on
Thursday at 11:30 a.m. against #10 Hofstra. The winner will play #2 Georgia
State in quarterfinal action on Friday at 11 a.m.
The Patriots defeated the Pride
during the regular season, 6-1 on March 4 at Hemstead Lake State Park. Mason swept all
six singles matches and Hofstra's point came from winning the top two doubles
matches.
Mason finished the regular season
with a 16-7 record this season, 3-2 in the CAA. The 16 wins is the most on
record for the Patriots. The last time the Patriots had double-digit wins was
during the 1997-98 season finishing with a 12-8 record. In 1994-95 the Patriots
enjoyed a 14-6 overall record, 6-1 in the CAA and the team advanced to the
championship match of the CAA Tournament for the first time ever, earning Gary
Quam the title of CAA Coach of the Year.
This season the Patriots top player Jordan Dyke
finished with a 12-7 record, with all but one match played at the No. 1 singles
position, in his first season with the Patriots. Dyke played one season at VCU
before redshirting and transferring to Mason. In doubles action, Dyke and
teammate Jimmy Davis recorded an 11-7 mark at the top doubles position. Dyke
teamed up with Chris Borden in four doubles matches, winning two to finish with
an overall 13-9 mark in doubles action.
Senior Jorge Osuna is finishing his four-year career
with the Patriots. He has earned victories in 45 singles matches, all played
from the top three positions. This season he finished 12-10 in dual action, 9-9
from No. 3, 2-1 from No. 2 and 1-0 from the top singles position. He teamed up
with Nick Barker for five doubles matches to end the season with a 3-2 record.
Sophomore Jimmy Davis recorded a 15-7 dual season
record with the majority of action from No. 2 singles, finishing the regular
season at 12-6. Overall, Davis is 16-14 after posting a 1-7 fall tournament
record. He is 7-3 in his last 10 matches going into the CAA Championships.
Scott Keaton, playing mainly from the No. 4 singles
finished with a 10-4 dual record, 17-5 overall. Keaton transferred from New
Mexico and is finishing his first year on the Patriots tennis squad. Keaton has
paired up with two teammates to compete in doubles. Keaton and Davis finished
fall tournament schedule with a 4-2 record. In dual action, Joseph Wiggins was
his partner all season at No. 2 doubles, recording a 9-5 mark.
Taylor Sargent was the only player to record a
20-win season (20-12), 15-8 in dual matches. The second-year player played at
all but the top singles position, but recorded a 6-2 record at No. 4 and a 5-4
mark at No. 5 for the majority of his matches. Sargent fared well in doubles,
winning 13 matches and falling only in eight. He and Christopher Borden went
10-7 in dual action from both No. 2 and 3 spots.
Joseph Wiggins finished the regular season with an
11-3 overall record, 8-1 from the No. 6 singles spot. He was 9-5 with Keaton in
doubles action.
