CAMDEN, N.J. - The
George Mason rowing team collected five top-four finishes in its preliminary
heats in day one of the Knecht Cup, advancing three boats to semifinal action
in the afternoon. The novice 4 and varsity 8 boats advanced out of the
semifinal action and returned Sunday morning for petite final races.
George Mason opened competition on Saturday with a fourth-place
finish from the varsity 4. The Patriots crossed in 8:28.85 with Loyola grabbing
first with a time of 8:08.42. Mason's next two boats would advance to semifinal
action with the novice 4 and varsity 8. The novice 4 claimed second-place
behind Pittsburgh, advancing to the semifinal round later in the afternoon.
Mason crossed in 8:36.69 behind Pittsburgh's 8:12.29.
A third-place finish from the varsity 8 in 6:54.98 pushed it
to semifinal action, while the second varsity 8 boat took fourth in 7:25.84.
Preliminary action closed out with the novice 8 earning a fourth-place finish
with a time of 7:56.72. Bucknell took first in 7:14.96.
In semifinal action in the afternoon, both the novice 4 and
varsity 8 boats earned petite final berths. The novice 4 took third-place in
the third semifinal crossing in 8:41.26. The varsity 8 raced next and finished
fourth crossing in 6:52.70, good enough for a petite final berth. Mason's final
boat racing in semifinal action was the novice 8 which took fifth-place with a
time of 7:51.37.
Returning for Sunday action, Mason took fifth and sixth
place finishes in the novice 4 and varsity 8, respectively. The novice 4 opened
the day crossing in 8:44.08 for fourth-place, while the varsity 8 finished in
7:02.44 to claim sixth.

Over the next two weeks, Mason will prepare for the 2012 Colonial Athletic
Association Championships to be held on Sunday, April 29 at Sandy Run Regional
Park on the Occoquan Reservoir.
