WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - For the third time this season, senior
Emily Ellisen scored four times, but it was not enough as the George Mason
lacrosse team dropped an 18-8 decision at William and Mary Sunday afternoon in
Colonial Athletic Association play. Ellisen also became the program's all-time draw
control leader in a season, recording four on the afternoon for 53 on the
season.
Ellisen, who became the all-time career leader in draw
controls earlier this season, surpassed the previous mark of 50 draw controls
set by Liz Paoli in 1998. Ellisen owns 113 career draw controls.
Mason (3-11, 1-4 CAA) was led offensively by Ellisen with
four goals, while Rachel Obregon, Caitlin Formato, Mackenzie Jones and Anna
Kopecka each chipped in a goal. Obregon, Ellisen and Katie Mascolo each added
an assist, while both Joy Oberlin and Formato, who led with four ground balls, paced
the team with two caused turnovers each. Brittany Pastrana and Katie Teague split
time in cage, with Pastrana making four saves and drawing the loss.
Kaleigh Noon and Kyrstin Mackrides each scored four times to
pace William & Mary (3-12, 1-4 CAA), while Maggie Anderson finished the game
with three assists, two goals, two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Goalkeeper Lucy Ferguson scooped up five ground balls and eight saves, including
six in the second half, to pick up the win playing the full game in cage.
The home squad opened the contest scoring the first three
goals in just under three minutes before Formato and Ellisen cut the score to
3-2 with 22:00 on the clock. The Tribe, however, opened a 6-2 advantage with
three unanswered goals that followed. Kopecka snapped the run on a Mascolo feed
before Ellisen notched her second goal of the afternoon at 16:07. W&M
closed the half scoring three of four goals for a 9-5 halftime advantage.
Noon opened the final period giving William and Mary a 10-5
advantage before Ellisen scored for the final time on the afternoon at 20:52.
Using a 6-0 run, the Tribe opened a comfortable margin, holding a 16-6 lead
with 6:30 remaining. Mason scored two of the final four goals when Jones and
Obregon found the back of the net for the final 18-8 score.
William & Mary won the advantage in shots (30-24),
ground balls (23-19), draw controls (14-13) and free position shots (2-0).
