FAIRFAX,
VA. -The Patriots fell to the Colonials of George Washington in their
non-conference match up by a score of 7-5.
Mason started the game well by scoring two runs in the bottom half
of the first inning. The inning started
when Tori Dudley, the designated player, drew a leadoff walked and advanced to
third on an error by the third baseman on a sacrifice bunt attempt by freshman
Cori Prince. The next batter, fellow
freshman Brooke Blankenship hit a single up the middle and drove in both Dudley
and Prince for the games first two runs.
The Colonials responded in the top of the third inning by scoring
four runs off two hits, two walks and two costly errors, leading to three of
the four runs being unearned.
The Patriots showed resilience by responding back in the bottom of
the third, scoring two runs to tie the game at four. Blankenship led the inning off with a triple
to dead centerfield and was driven in on the next pitch by senior third baseman
Rachael Davies' sac fly to right field.
The second run of the inning was scored by Reagan Doiron who singled and
was driven in when junior right fielder Samantha Barney singled back up the
middle.
George Washington was the next team to score when they added two
in the top of the sixth inning but once again Mason responded in the bottom
half of the inning, scoring a run off the bat of the pinch hitting senior Katie Rynex. Second baseman Mary O'Connor, who
doubled to lead off the inning, scored on the Rynex single.
Unfortunately for Mason, the Colonials added one more run in the
top of the seventh and Mason was unable to respond in their final at bat.
Mason will now shift their focus back to conference play when they
travel to Hofstra for a three game set with the Pride in Hempstead, New York.
