NEWARK, Del. - The
Patriots were able to complete their second consecutive conference series
victory on Sunday by winning the third game of a three game series with the
University of Delaware, by a score of 8-0.
Mason scored their first run of the game in the top of the
third inning when Tiffany Webb, the designated player, singled to third
base. Webb then advanced to third on a
double to left field by senior centerfielder Tori Dudley. Later in the inning, freshman Brooke
Blankenship hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Webb.
Mason added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning
after junior Megan Blank tripled to right centerfield, scoring Katie Rynex who
reached base earlier in the inning on a walk.
Webb followed Blank's triple by reaching first on a fielder's choice
bunt and then advancing to second on a throwing error by the pitcher, which
scored Blank from third.
The Patriots continued to pour it on in the top of the 5th
inning by adding another run, to increase the lead to 4-0. The run occurred when Rynex reached first on
a fielding error by the third baseman, which also allowed Blankenship, who singled
up the middle in the second at bat of the inning for Mason, to score.
Up 4-0, the Patriots were able to end the game an inning
early by scoring four runs in the top of the sixth to go up 8-0 and win by the
run rule. The inning started when Blank
reached first on a fielding error by the UD shortstop. That error was followed by an infield single
by Webb and then a 2 RBI double to left centerfield by Blankenship two batters
later. The next batter, catcher Emily
Lafferty hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Alyssa See. The Patriots were able to add their fourth
run when shortstop Rachael Davies singled up the middle to score Blankenship.
Sophomore Stephanie Maher picked up her fourth win of the
season by pitching all six innings, scattering six hits, striking out one,
walking zero and allowing zero runs. The
offensive leader for Mason today was Brooke Blankenship, who went 3-3 with a
double, three RBI's and two runs scored.
Mason will be back in action again on Wednesday when the
Patriots travel to College Park, Maryland to take on the University of Maryland
Terrapins in a doubleheader. The first
game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 5pm.
