Mason Nation got some great news today as senior Mendbagana Tovuujav and freshman Vincent Rodriguez were selected to compete in the NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships in St. Louis, Missouri
from Thursday, March 15th - Saturday, March 17th.
Tovuujav, now 20-3 on the season, earned a bid to Nationals
by winning the CAA Chammpionship in the 197 pound weight class. He has been a dominant force in the
conference throughout the season and will now prepare move on to Nationals for
the second time in his Mason career.
Tovuujav is slated to wrestle Matthew Wilps, the number 3 seed in the
197 pound weight class from University
of Pittsburgh, in the
first round.
For Rodriguez, the conclusion of a very successful freshman
season ended with a second place finish in the CAA Tournament and an at large
bid to compete in the NCAA tournament.
Rodriguez, who wrestles at 125 pounds, finished the season with an 18-9
record and some impressive victories over other NCAA qualifiers. The freshman will wrestle Trent Sprenkle, a North Dakota State product who has accumulated a
record of 30-10 this season.
The first round of the tournament will begin on the morning
of Thursday, March 15th with competitions taking place until the
championship rounds on Saturday evening.
