FAIRFAX, Va. - Softball
concluded action in the Patriot Classic on Sunday by winning two games by one
run. Mason first beat Marist, 9-8 on a
walk off single by senior first baseman Katie Rynex and then defeated Cornell,
3-2 in the final game of the tournament.
In the first game, Mason took an early 4-1 in the first
inning and added a fifth run in the third to increase their lead to four. After each team scored a run in the fifth,
Marist had a huge sixth inning scoring six unearned run after a two out
fielding error.
Trailing 8-7 heading in to the bottom of the seventh, senior Katie Rynex delivered in the clutch with a two out single to right
field that scored the game tying and winning runs.
In the second game, Cornell started strong by scoring one
run off three hits in the first inning. Mason
responded in the fourth inning by taking advantage of two straight Cornell
errors, scoring their first run of the game without registering a hit.
The Patriots were able to strike back in the sixth when junior
Reagan Doiron double to the left centerfield gap and freshman second baseman
Mary O'Connor tripled down the right field line, scoring Doiron. O'Connor then scored on a wild pitch on the
next batter to increase Mason's lead to 3-1.
Cornell responded with a solo home run in the sixth inning but
was unable to score in the seventh as pitcher Stephanie Maher picked up the
save.
The Patriots will be home again next weekend as they host
Cornell and Hartford in the Mason Invitational.
