NEWARK, Del. - The
Patriots split a doubleheader with the University of Delaware on Saturday,
winning the first game by a score of 4-2 and falling in the second game by a
score of 4-3. This is the second conference
series of season for Mason, who now has a 3-2 CAA record.
In the first game, Delaware started the game by a scoring a
run in the first inning but Mason was able to bounce back in the second by
scoring a run of their own. Senior first
baseman Katie Rynex started the inning off with a single and eventually scored
on an RBI single to left field by designated hitter Tiffany Webb. Delaware scored one more run in the bottom of
the sixth inning but Mason responded in the top of the seventh with three runs
to earn the win. The inning started when
centerfielder Tori Dudley was hit by a pitch and then scored two batters late
when freshman third baseman Brooke Blankenship hit an RBI double to left
centerfield. The next batter was Emily
Lafferty who singled to left field. Cori
Prince scored for Lafferty as the pinch runner when Rachael Davies hit a two
run homer on the next at bat.
In the second game, Mason scored all three of their runs in
the first two innings, scoring one in the first and two in the second. In the first inning, Tori Dudley reached
second base on a double to right centerfield and eventually scored on a wild
pitch. In the second inning, Katie Rynex
led the inning off with a single to right center and scored on a Megan Blank
double, who also scored later in the inning.
Unfortunately, Delaware bounced back with two runs in the third inning,
one in the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.
Mason and Delaware will face off again on Sunday for the
third and final game of the series, with first pitch scheduled to take place at
12 noon.
