FAIRFAX, Va. - On
a day that started with light showers at the Mason Softball Complex, the
Patriots took a 1-0 lead in to the bottom of the seventh but were unable to
hold on, eventually losing to the Hoyas of Georgetown by a score of 2-1.
Freshman pitcher Tiffany Harvell started for Mason pitched
seven strong innings, while giving up only one earned run off a home run in the
top of the seventh with two outs to tie the game at one.
Mason got their run in the bottom of the second inning when
freshman centerfielder Cori Prince reached third base on a throwing error by
the pitcher on a soft comeback hit. The
next batter, junior outfielder Megan Blank singled to third base to drive in
what was then the go ahead run.
After the Hoyas tied the game in the top of the seventh,
they scored again in the top of the ninth inning to go up 2-1 and put the
pressure back on Mason. Junior Reagan Doiron, who replaced Katie Rynex at first base, delivered in the bottom of the
ninth by hitting a leadoff double to right centerfield. Unfortunately she was left stranded at third
base when the game ended, as the Patriots were unable to drive her in.
Mason will be back on the road this weekend for their second
conference series of the season when they face off against University of
Delaware.
