FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Senior Derrick Butts became the first George Mason men's
diver to advance to the highest level, and this weekend he represented the
Patriots well at the NCAA Championships, taking place at the Weyerhauser King
County Aquatic Center in suburban Seattle.
In the 3-meter diving competition on Friday, Butts placed 23rd
in the preliminaries with a total score of 337.10, while on Thursday, Butts's
total score of 258.35 ranked 29th among the field. The top-16
finishers in each event advance to the final round, consisting of the 8-man
championship final as well as a consolation final.
Stanford's Kristian Ipsen captured the 3-meter title with a
score of 469.20 while Drew Livingston of Texas won the 1-meter crown with his
448.10 point total.
Butts finishes his career in Green and Gold as one of the
most decorated and successful athletes in program history. He had record-breaking performances throughout
the season en route to sweeping the Colonial Athletic Association diving titles
at the conference championship meet this February, and is the school record
holder in both the 1-meter (374.00) and 3-meter (395.17) dives.
