Wilmington, N.C.--The George Mason softball team wrapped up its weekend series with CAA foe UNCW, falling 5-4 to the Seahawks in an 11-inning thriller.
Alyssa See, Emily Lafferty, and Megan Blank each had two hits for the Patriots. Mason struck right at the start, putting up two runs in the first inning. See led the game off with a single. Tori Dudley then came up and hit a double to left center. After a groundout, Lafferty stepped up and hit a double of her own, driving in both See and Dudley.
UNCW responded in the second with a four-run inning. Mason starting pitcher Stephanie Maher recorded the first out. However, after a single and an error, UNCW was able to take advantage, recording five hits in the inning. Maher went 3 1/3 innings, giving up four runs, none of which were earned, and striking out one.
The score went unchanged until the seventh inning when the Patriots were able to rally. It started with Megan Blank getting a pinch-hit single. Reagan Doiron then pinch-hit for See drawing a walk. After a force out and another walk, Lafferty came through again, this time with a two-RBI single to tie the game. Lafferty finished with four RBIs on the day.
After more scoreless innings, UNCW used a pair of doubles to earn the walk-off win. Miranda Cranford took the loss, after she and Casey Herring provided a stellar effort in relief of Maher.
The loss drops Mason to 8-22 overall on the season, and 2-1 in conference play. The Patriots will look to rebound as they return to the Mason Softball Complex to face Georgetown. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
