WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The George Mason track and field team
traveled to Williamsburg over the weekend, competing in the Tribe Open on the
campus of William and Mary.
The men's team had one IC4A qualifier at the meet, as senior
Everett Hackett finished second in the 10000m run with a time of 29:43.17, the
second-best time in school history.
On the track, the Patriots had a trio of runners finish in
the top five of the 800m run. Sophomore Wil McReynolds placed second with a
time of 1:56.22, freshman Alex Levine was third in a time of 1:56.41, and senior
Andrew McGreal finished third in 1:56.84. Also recording top-five finishes on
the track were junior Cody Raphael in the 1500m run (4:03.38, 5th)
and junior Josh Schlickenmeyer in the 3000m run (9:18.25, 2nd).
In the field events, Mason had a trio of top-six finishers
in both the discus and hammer throw. Sophomore Kirk Nguyen led the way in the
discus, taking third with a distance of 43.36m, while senior Shaz Usman was
fifth (37.09m) and senior Michael Foley was sixth (35.48). Competing in the
hammer throw were sophomore Jason Wellington (46.01m, 4th), Nguyen
(43.25m, 5th) and Foley (40.81m, 6th).
The women had a pentad of athletes entered in field events
at the meet, led by another impressive performance from freshman Kelsey Reese
in the javelin, winning the event for the second meet in a row with a distance
of 40.05m.
Three athletes took part in the shot put, with junior Tia
Boyd placing fifth (10.97m), freshman Haley Hale sixth (10.73m) and sophomore Kaylin
Newman seventh (10.55m). Newman also competed in the discus (33.64m, 6th)
and hammer throw (36.38m, 10th), while sophomore Meredith Oare took
fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 42.20m and Boyd followed right
behind in sixth place with a distance of 41.04m.
Both teams return to action next weekend, traveling to the
Raleigh Relays hosted by N.C. State.
